A disagreement over the winner of a horse race resulted in a deadly gun battle between Mexican and Guatemalan drug traffickers.

Police spokesman Donald Gonzalez said that the traffickers had spent Sunday afternoon drinking in the Guatemalan town of Santa Ana Huista near the Mexican border when the row broke out over bets on a horse race.

Gonzalez said…

“They had been drinking at a local rodeo, and they were drunk, when they started insulting each other during a horse race and the shooting started.”

The traffickers fired at each other using automatic weapons and police also found grenade launchers at the scene of the final gun fight. Over 100 soldiers were sent to the area to break up the fight.

The dead included Guatemalan and Mexican nationals with many having previous convictions for drug trafficking.
