Cash Crisis Cripples Horse Owners

By Caroline On November 3rd, 2008 in Equestrian News /

Horse food, hay and bedding prices have all shot up this year and horse owners are struggling to cope with the increased burden on their pockets. As a result an increasing number of people are signing their horses over to rescue centres as they can no longer afford to look after them.

The situation is so bad that some charities are worried that they may have to start putting some older horses down to make room for needy cases.

With additional costs such as stabling, grazing, vets fees, worming, and farriers an average horse can cost anywhere from £3000-£5000 per year to look after. Often people think that horses are only kept by the wealthy but in reality most horse owners are normal, hard working people who make daily sacrifices to enable them to support their hobby.

Often the cheapest part of owning a horse is the initial cost to buy it. The real expense comes with the ongoing upkeep of the animal. Please give serious consideration to this if you are considering buying a horse for yourself or one of your children.
