James Gray Cruelty Case Starts 8 December

By admin On December 7th, 2008 in Equestrian News /

In January this year the RSPCA launched a huge animal rescue operation at Spindles Farm in Amersham. They found 146 neglected horses, ponies and donkeys. 32 dead horses were found at the scene and 3 more had to be put down.

111 equines were placed into the hands of various horse charities who have spent months treating and rehabilitating the animals.

It’s been a long wait but the cruelty hearing starts tomorrow (8 Dec) and due to the huge amounts of evidence and large number of witnesses is expected to run until March 2009.

Horse Survives Being Shot in the Head Six Times

By admin On December 5th, 2008 in Equestrian News, Wierd World of Horses /

Miracle is a very appropriate name for a horse that has survived such terrible cruelty.

Her owner decided he no longer wanted her so he sent her to be slaughtered. The man who picked her up couldn’t find the person he needed to do the job he needed so he decided to kill her himself.

He drove her to the desert and tried to put the horse down by shooting her in the head. He fired 6 shots, all of which failed to kill her.

Amazingly Miracle escaped and ran to a nearby property where the residents got help.

After several months of treatment, 20 year old Miracle was transferred to a horse shelter in New Mexico where she is available for adoption. She has vision and hearing problems but it otherwise healthy.

The man who shot Miracle has been charged with animal cruelty.

Money Saving Tips for Keeping Winter Horses

By admin On December 4th, 2008 in Horse Care /

With increased feeding and bedding costs, winter is always the most expensive time for keeping horses so we’ve rounded up some top tips to help you save money this winter.

1, If you have storage space buy green hay straight off the field in summer. It’s much cheaper than paying winter prices when demand has increased.

2, Don’t waste money on hard feed if your horse doesn’t need it. Most horses do very well on good quality hay or haylage alone.

3, Learn how to repair your damaged horse rugs and equipment rather than replacing them. Most repairs can be done by hand if you don’t have a sewing machine.

4, Organise a tack swap with your friends. It’s a great way of clearing out unused equipment as well as gaining stuff you need.

5, Clean your own dirty rugs with a hose, a stiff brush and some horse shampoo rather than sending them off to a professional.

6, If you can’t afford to keep several horses then don’t. Sell some to bring the number down to a manageable level.

7, Ask local sawmills if they can provide you with shavings. Make sure they are dust free softwood and not redwood shavings.

8, For paper bedding try asking a local company if you can take their shredded paper away. It will save you both money.

9, Turn off lights when not in use. If using an indoor school switch on half the lights only unless you need good lighting for jumping etc.

10, If you are on full or part livery consider doing more of the jobs yourself. Alternatively consider grass livery with shelter for hardy types.

11, Turn your horse out for as long as possible every day to avoid soiling expensive bedding.

12, Consider letting your horse go barefoot. This may be temporary if you don’t ride over the winter or permanent if your horse copes well being ridden without shoes.

13, Keep up good levels of basic horse care. A well cared for horse is less likely to need veterinary treatment.

Gun Fight Over Guatemalan Horse Race Kills 17 People

By Caroline On December 2nd, 2008 in Equestrian News, Wierd World of Horses /

A disagreement over the winner of a horse race resulted in a deadly gun battle between Mexican and Guatemalan drug traffickers.

Police spokesman Donald Gonzalez said that the traffickers had spent Sunday afternoon drinking in the Guatemalan town of Santa Ana Huista near the Mexican border when the row broke out over bets on a horse race.

Gonzalez said…

“They had been drinking at a local rodeo, and they were drunk, when they started insulting each other during a horse race and the shooting started.”

The traffickers fired at each other using automatic weapons and police also found grenade launchers at the scene of the final gun fight. Over 100 soldiers were sent to the area to break up the fight.

The dead included Guatemalan and Mexican nationals with many having previous convictions for drug trafficking.

Call Again Cavalier Put Down

By Caroline On December 1st, 2008 in Equestrian News, Horse & Pony Breeds /

Mary King’s Olympic medal winning horse, Call Again Cavalier, was put down yesterday after falling and breaking his femur.

Mary was competing at the Express Eventing International Cup in Cardiff when the accident happened.

They were tackling a narrow corner fence called ‘The Duck Houses’ when the 16 year old horse fell and suffered a broken leg.

The 13,000 strong crowd watched as Call Again Cavalier was loaded into a horsebox to be taken away for assessment. Unfortunately his injuries were so severe that the decision was taken to put him to sleep immediately.

Express Eventing organiser Stuart Buntine said:

“This is extremely sad. Our thoughts are with Mary King and Call Again Cavalier’s owners, Edwin and Sue Davies and Janette Chin.”
